The Witch story continues..... "GOTCHA"!

Although Halloween is over I've been busy finishing up my second illustration in this series..... this will be it for awhile, but I'll  be coming back to this story line eventually....

My progression from first sketch to finished color.  I love looking back at the development of my painting but the only problem for me is that I always think of another component that I could have added.... darn!

When You Meet A Witch... finished color

It's finally done..... I worked on painting the boys face and put the background trees in very soft so as not to fight for attention with the main characters in the foreground, and I like it as a resting place, not having much activity there.  Also, this space is light enough to put text over.
So here we have the finished piece... hope you like it!

Almost there! I've finished painting the witch and started on the boy...

FUN STUFF!

When You Meet A Witch... first color

Here I've laid down my first washes and then I had a brilliant idea..... I wanted to indicate the wind rushing by just as the little boy sees the witch for the first time.  I used some miskit to block out a few of the bigger leaves and then put color down on the nice WET juicy page.  I'm very happy with the way it looks... let me know what you think.

When You Meet A Witch... Sketching the idea....

I thought it might interest some of you to see how I progress from a rough sketch of an illustration idea through to the final painting.... they don't always go as planned but this halloween idea, I think, turned out very well :)  It's based on a story idea that I still haven't fleshed out but, as usual with me, I couldn't wait to start painting some of the images in my head.  Hope you are intrigued and want to see more of the story.... you'll have to wait a bit though... till I get some of these fun ideas painted.  Then I'll go back to the narrative... backwards though this approach is it seems to work for me.

This is the first rough sketch.... I didn't like the body position on the right, too stiff.  So moved onto  the second drawing on the left and developed it more once I established that I really liked the interaction between the characters.

This is the finished sketch.  I added the cat, trees, moon, bats and distant landscape.... yep! I'm happy with this one :)
